Abstract :

Conceived originally as a means of enriching the online teaching of undergraduate music courses, a significantly enhanced synchronous “chat” format was developed using multiple media to more closely replicate the flexibility and richness of traditional classroom music teaching. Due to technological limitations of available Internet bandwidth and the compressed audio and video processing of available learning management systems, an alternative asynchronous approach modeled after podcasts proved advantageous and superior in the areas of improved audio and video, flexible editing, convenient access, and enthusiastic student participation. The author presents arguments for both real-time and archived approaches to the online presentation of content in music, applicable equally to other content areas as well..
