Abstract :

The usage of Open Source Software (OSS) has been extended in a wide range of business fields not only IT industries. Behind this current situation, there are tremendous inputs by the volunteer engineers in the development communities. In this study, we have conducted questionnaire survey to Japanese IT companies, and then the data was collected for 3 consecutive years (2012 – 2014). With these data sets, we analyzed the relation between OSS utilization and development contribution, and how these affect the business growth. Our study revealed that Japanese IT companies are rather “free riders” of OSS, the volume of development contributions are far less than that of utilization. In our previous studies, we constructed the Logistic Model to investigate the influential factors on business growth; however, no clear evidence has been found. OSS-related factors affect business growth in some form or another; however, the volume of impacts seems to be rather “subtle” in the Japanese IT companies. In our previous studies, single year data set (for example, 2012, 2013, 2014 separately) was employed for analysis and found no evidence, so the next research question is to investigate the changes for over 3-year time. In this study, we divided the responded companies into two groups: companies utilizing/contributing to OSS and companies NOT utilizing/contributing, and then investigated the differences of business growth indicators such as sales growth and employee number. In summary, we conclude that OSS utilization affecting business growth in short and expectedly a longer term, while the effect of development contribution is limited, drowned out by some other market factors .
